William Lee Parker, Ph.D. has been in private practice for more than 35 years. After growing up in a deaf family, Dr. Parker went on to receive a Masters of Art Degree in Speech Pathology from the California State University, Long Beach in 1970, and a Doctorate Degree in Hearing Science from the University of Florida in 1973. Dr. Parker teaches other audiologists and hearing aid dispensers at his educational workshops throughout the country, including: ASHA, CASHA, ADA, and manufacturer sales meetings. Palm Springs Hearing Seminars was co-founded by Dr. Parker in 1979 and is well regarded in California.
In addition, Dr. Parker has published articles and pamphlets; taught graduate level audiology courses; has presented many hearing health issues in community forums; improved hearing aids and invented hearing aid products; consulted with manufacturers on the design and modification of the CIC Hearing Instrument; produced educational films and brochures; consulted by TV script writers and movie producers on hearing loss. He has also appeared as an audiologist in the movie "Johnny Belinda". Dr. Parker has also been featured on NBC Action News, in The Daily Breeze Newspaper, and in The Beach Reporter Newspaper.
A story about our founder:
When Dr. William Lee Parker of Hermosa Beach, was only nine months old he formed the letter "L" with his thumb and index finger, then touched his tiny thumb to his forehead, and signed his first word, "daddy."
His mother and father reacted like any elated parents on hearing their baby "speak" his first words. Both parents were deaf. Though little William Parker had normal hearing, he didn't begin to speak orally until he was three-years-old. He, of course, became an expert in both sign language and in translating.
"My language structure, which began with signing, was right on target," he said. Neighbors and other deaf families taught Lee how to communicate with his voice. For over 35 years now, Dr. Parker has been the teacher, not only helping the deaf and hard of hearing, but showing them and their families how to cope in a world that isn't always compassionate to the hearing impaired.
Dr. Parker is an audiologist, a very good one. His patients at the Parker Hearing Institute in Torrance, which he founded over three decades ago, range from infants and children to adults and senior citizens. Dr. Parker is the South Bay's leading audiologist, he has tested hearing and fit more hearing devices than anyone in Southern California. His daughter Andrea and his son Josh both work in this family-run institute, across from Little Company at 4201 Torrance Boulevard. Parker Hearing Institute boasts over 92% patient satisfaction.
In a typical day, he tests the hearing of a little girl who was born deaf, then counsels her parents on how to overcome their anxieties and fears about raising the child. Through speech therapy, he teaches a hearing impaired youngster to articulate words and sentences properly. He convinces a cantankerous senior citizen to quit brooding and accept the fact that he must, at this late stage in life, wear a hearing aid.
People skills are paramount when working with the hearing impaired, Dr. Parker and his staff and (highly qualified) children are the very best at working patiently with often frustrated hearing impaired of all ages. It may stem from Dr. William Lee Parkers obvious empathy, or it may be a result of his superior scientific training (PhD in Hearing Science/ Univ Florida; Masters in Speech Pathology/ CSULB, etc) that makes him so good with patients. Lastly, it may be the fact that Dr. Parker has run his own business for over 35 years right here in Torrance, helping thousands of patients live a fuller life, all this while raising a beautiful family in Hermosa Beach with his wife Christine (Sisson) Parker.
Whatever the reason, Parker Hearing Institute takes the fear out of testing and fitting for devices. They are open for business accepting all hard-of-hearing or deaf persons, during regular business hours. There are Parker Hearing satellite offices in San Pedro and Seal Beach, too, staffed with professionals trained by Dr. Parker personally.
